This SOTM5 is an 18″ .308 Winchester rifle built on Second of Ten’s billet SOTM5 receivers: a thermal-fitted MOD-0 upper over a 7075-T6 aluminum lower. The barrel, gas system, bolt, recoil parts and controls are each chosen for this cartridge and this role, and each is named below. Receivers, handguard, buffer tube, stock and grip are finished in chocolate chip Cerakote®.
A note on the name
SOTM5 names the rifle; the serialized part is the lower receiver. MOD-0 names the billet upper fitted to it. Chocolate chip names the hand-applied desert camouflage, so the pattern differs from rifle to rifle.
//The Barrel
The barrel is the part of this rifle that most decides how it shoots, so it is the part chosen first. Second of Ten fits the Faxon Match Series 18″ heavy fluted .308 Winchester barrel, and these are the features of it that matter.
416-R stainless steel, QPQ nitrideMatch-grade stainless barrel steel, salt-bath QPQ nitrided on the bore and exterior.
5R button rifling, 1:10 twist5R rifling puts lands opposite grooves, so the bullet is engraved at a gentler angle: less jacket deformation, and a bore that fouls less and cleans faster. The 1:10 twist suits the bullet weights .308 Winchester is loaded with.
Chamber CMM-checkedFaxon checks the chamber on a coordinate measuring machine, and headspace is 100% checked with a .308 Win go/no-go gauge.
Inspected before nitridingFaxon wet magnetic particle inspects the barrel before it is nitrided, and cuts a target crown.
Torqued and pinned extensionDPMS LR-308 pattern barrel extension, NP3 nickel-Teflon coated, torqued to 150 ft-lb and pinned by Faxon.
Heavy fluted profile18.125″ breech face to muzzle. Faxon lists the barrel at 2.25 lb.
Rifle-length gas, adjustableA .093″ gas port on a rifle-length system. The RIFLESPEED adjustable gas block is pinned to the barrel, then sets the gas for the load.
5/8×24 muzzle thread, brake installedA Faxon Gunner 7.62 MuzzLok® 3-port brake is installed on a MuzzLok nut with no crush washer, so it times and comes off in the field. With it removed, the barrel is ready for a direct-thread suppressor.
//The Handguard
A free-float handguard only helps if it stays where it was put. The 15″ SOT Wedge-Lock M-LOK® handguard is built around that.
Steel HD barrel nutA steel heavy-duty barrel nut, phosphate finished, carries the handguard.
Grade 8 hardwareThe handguard is secured with Grade 8 hardware.
Full-length top Picatinny railAn unbroken top rail, full length, for optics and accessories.
Seven sides of M-LOK®M-LOK® slots on all seven sides of the handguard.
6061-T6 aluminum, 14.4 ozFinished in the same chocolate chip Cerakote® as the receivers.
Free floatNothing on the handguard bears on the barrel ahead of the barrel nut.
//The Case
01The barrel comes first
18″ Faxon Match Series heavy fluted .308 Winchester barrel in 416-R stainless, 5R button rifled, 1:10 twist, QPQ nitrided bore and exterior. The rest of the rifle is specified around it; the detail is set out above.
02A thermal-fitted billet upper
The SOTM5 MOD-0 upper is machined from a solid billet of 7075-T6 aluminum to the LR-308 DPMS high pattern, with laser-engraved T-marks on the top rail. It is thermal fitted to the barrel, so the joint between barrel and receiver is an interference fit and not a slip fit. It keeps the forward assist.
03Gas you can set, on a block that cannot move
A RIFLESPEED adjustable gas system lets the rifle be tuned to the load and to a suppressor instead of running over-gassed. The gas block is pinned to the barrel, in line with the Bombproof by Design™ philosophy: a pinned block cannot shift the way one held by clamping or set screws alone can.
04A bolt carrier group for .308
DPMS Gen 1 LR-308 pattern group with a shot-peened Carpenter 158 bolt and an SAE 8620 carrier. The gas key is chrome lined, torqued and staked; the cam pin and extractor are heat treated and the firing pin is precision ground.
05Nickel boron, end to end
The bolt, carrier, extractor, gas key and cam pin are all nickel boron (NiB) plated: a hard, slick surface that wipes clean of carbon.
06A brake that comes off
The Faxon Gunner 7.62 MuzzLok® brake is held by a MuzzLok nut, not a crush washer, so it can be timed and removed in the field. Take it off and the 5/8×24 thread is ready for a direct-thread suppressor.
07Caliber marked on the cover
The ejection port dust cover is engraved .308 WIN with the Second of Ten crest, so the caliber reads at a glance with the cover closed.
08A two-stage trigger, left as made
LaRue Tactical MBT-2S two-stage trigger with a curved bow: 4.5 lb, 2.5 lb first stage and 2.0 lb second. Second of Ten does not stone, polish or alter sear engagement surfaces.
09Controls on both sides
Ambidextrous bolt release, with an enlarged paddle-style bolt catch on the left and Second of Ten’s own serrated release on the right. Ambidextrous magazine release with an enlarged left-side catch. Radian Weapons Talon® ambidextrous safety selector and a Breek Arms Warhammer Mod 2 AR-10 charging handle with oversize latches on both sides.
10A recoil system specified part by part
Carbine-length, Mil-Spec diameter receiver extension in chocolate chip Cerakote®, an LR-308 carbine heavy buffer with solid tungsten weights to settle bolt bounce, and a JP Enterprises tuned and polished AR-10 / LR-308 buffer spring, with an HM Defense QD end plate.
11Tension where the halves meet
Every SOTM5 billet lower carries a nylon-tipped upper tension screw that takes up play between the receivers. Enhanced LR-308 takedown and pivot pins in steel, with low-profile heads that clear the ambidextrous selector.
12Furniture in the rifle’s finish
Magpul STR® Mil-Spec carbine stock, with two storage tubes and an integral QD sling mount, and a Magpul MOE-K2® grip, both Cerakoted in the same chocolate chip pattern as the rifle.
//Inspect It Yourself
This rifle has a zoomable inspection page showing both sides of the rifle as built, so the markings and machining can be read from the photograph instead of taken from a spec table. The serial number is blurred; no other marking is altered.

//Notices
Set the gas for the load
The adjustable gas system should be set for the ammunition in use and reset when a suppressor is fitted or removed. A setting that suits one load is not necessarily right for another.
The camouflage is applied by hand
Cerakote® camouflage is applied by hand, so the pattern on the rifle you receive will differ from the one photographed.
