* Sharps Bros. manufactures the receiver; Second of Ten is the builder of record. The receiver is manufactured, rollmarked and serialised by Sharps Bros. of Eugene, Oregon as a 7075-T6 billet SHOWDOWN, and Second of Ten claims none of that engineering. Samurai Series and Takanoha Edition name the complete Second of Ten rifle built on it — the barrel, the muzzle device, the controls, the sights, the furniture and every applied finish are Second of Ten’s selection and work. The rifle is the whole assembly; the serialised part is the lower.
The menpō mask is finished by hand, so no two are identical. The face, the gilt scrollwork and the white teeth are applied and blended by hand over the Cerakote® base, and the dark green is graded rather than flat — it reads almost black in the shadows and only shows its color where the light catches it. Highlight placement and the exact break of the burnished panels will differ from the rifle photographed here. That is the nature of the work, not a variance to be corrected.
This is the lower from SOT-WEB-SAM-LWR-013, and three of its controls have changed. The serial on the left frame matches that page — one receiver, two states. But the configuration supplied for this rifle differs from what LWR-013 publishes in three places: the AR Gold trigger is a straight bow here against a curved one there; the fire control pins are KNS anti-rotation against low-profile non-rotating; and the magazine release is 18K heavy gold plated against a gold anodized extended button over a Strike Industries catch. Either the lower was reworked between the two shoots or one of the two pages is out of date. This page states the rifle as supplied.
The crest runs the length of the rifle. The Maruni Chigai Takanoha mon — crossed hawk feathers in a ring — is laid in 14K maki gold on the grip panels, engraved on the gold plated ejection port cover beside the caliber marking, engraved on the handguard beside the edition name, laid again in 14K gold foil on the cherry rail panels, on both magazines, and cut into the case foam. It is what carries the edition rather than any one component.
The gold through the handguard is the barrel, not the rail. The barrel is TiN gold plated — titanium nitride, a hard ceramic coating that happens to be gold — so it shows through every M-LOK slot along the handguard. What reads as a gold-striped rail in the photographs is the barrel behind a black handguard, and the rail fasteners holding that handguard are separately gold plated.
The crest is carried into the case, not just onto the rifle. The Plano case is cut for this build and marked with the Takanoha mon in the foam, and both magazines carry it too — laser engraved on the Magpul PMAG, laser engraved and 24K gold plated on the E-Lander steel magazine. The edition is delivered as a set rather than as a rifle with accessories.
The two sides do not repeat each other. 侍 (samurai) is carried on the left of the magwell and 将軍 (shōgun) on the right. Read one side and you have only half the piece — which is the reason this page shows both.
The grip crest is a gold inlay, and it wants a light touch. The Maruni Chigai Takanoha mon is laid in 14K maki gold into Brazilian cherry grip panels. It is an applied finish, not an engraving: wipe it down, and keep aggressive solvents, bore cleaner and abrasive pads off the wood. A grip panel can be refinished; stripped foil cannot be put back.
Nothing in these frames is retouched except the serial. The serial number is masked on the left-side frame. The manufacturer and address rollmarks are left exactly as struck, and no mark, blemish or tool witness has been removed.
