// The operator’s case

Most groups sold as chrome are not chrome everywhere. The extractor and the gas key usually stay phosphate.

There is nothing wrong with that — phosphate holds oil, and both parts work perfectly well in it. But it does mean the two components that sit deepest in the fouling are the two that give carbon the most to key into. This group is chrome on every surface: carrier, bolt, extractor and gas key. Everything the fouling touches is the same slick, hard, easily wiped surface.

Underneath the finish it is the standard Microbest specification: 8620 tool steel carrier in the full-auto M16 profile, C158 bolt, shot peened, individually High Pressure Tested and Magnetic Particle Inspected, with Sprinco extractor and ejector springs and a properly staked 4130 gas key on Grade 8 hardware. Microbest build bolt carrier groups for the military and for other small arms manufacturers; this is the same production, sold in OEM packaging without the branding markup.

Second of Ten supplies it Enhanced, with our arrow-index-marked cam pin and an index-marked gas key. Neither changes how the group runs. Both change what you can tell about it at a glance.

What the Enhanced version actually changes

Nothing mechanical. The group is the same Microbest All-Chrome group, unmodified, with the same warranty. What changes is that two things which were previously invisible become visible: which way the cam pin went in, and whether a gas key screw has moved since it left us.

We did not make the group better. We made it easier to tell when something has gone wrong.

// Why it

Chrome all the way through.

01 Chrome on the extractor and the gas key too

This is what separates this group from most chrome-finished groups, including our own Super-Stake, which keeps a phosphate extractor and gas key. Here every surface is chrome. The practical effect is uniformity — there is no part of this group that cleans differently from the rest of it, and nothing that needs a different approach at the bench.

02 C158 bolt, HPT and MPI

C158 steel, shot peened, then High Pressure Tested and Magnetic Particle Inspected individually. HPT proves the bolt survived an overpressure round; MPI looks for the crack that proof round might have started. Either one alone tells you less than people assume.

03 Full-auto profile carrier

8620 tool steel, M16 full-auto cut. The extra mass at the rear carries more of the bolt through the cycle and makes timing less sensitive to a gas system running slightly hot or slightly cold.

04 Sprinco springs, both ends

Sprinco extractor spring and Sprinco ejector spring, with a black extractor insert. Springs are the cheapest parts in a bolt carrier group and the ones most likely to be the reason it stops working several thousand rounds in.

05 Staked, on Grade 8 hardware

The 4130 gas key is properly staked on Grade 8 fasteners. Note this group is specified with Grade 8 hardware rather than the OCKS screws and hand staking on our Super-Stake sheet — if the staking is the thing you care about most, that is the group to look at.

06 Unmarked, and priced accordingly

These ship in OEM packaging without roll marks or branding. It is the same production that goes into groups sold for considerably more with a logo on the carrier. If you want a name engraved on the side, this is not that group.

07 SOT Enhanced — the arrow-indexed cam pin

A cam pin can be reinstalled the wrong way round, and the rifle will run for a while before it tells you. The Enhanced version carries our arrow-index-marked cam pin, its head bearing the SOT arrowhead with SOT inside it. The arrow point faces toward the bolt face. That reference holds with the bolt out of the rifle and out of the carrier, which is exactly when the mistake gets made.

08 SOT Enhanced — the index-marked gas key

A single fine engraved line runs across the gas key and both screw heads. While the line is continuous, nothing has turned. If it ever steps out of line, a screw is backing out — visible during a normal cleaning, with no tools and no torque wrench, long before it becomes a stoppage. It costs nothing to look at, which is the entire argument for it.

// Before you order

Safety — if the gas key index line is out of alignment. Stop using the bolt carrier group. A stepped index line means the screw has become loose and is backing out of the bolt carrier, which indicates an imminent failure of the bolt carrier. Once the gas key screws loosen, high-pressure propellant gas leaks out instead of efficiently pushing the carrier rearward, and that loss of pressure leads to immediate cycling failures — short-stroking, failure to extract, or a complete stoppage.

Have the bolt carrier group inspected by a knowledgeable gunsmith. If it was purchased from Second of Ten, contact our Support team at support@secondoften.com for a replacement.

Fitment and inspection.

  • Degrease and lubricate before installation. The group ships in OEM packaging with manufacturing residues on it.
  • This is a complete bolt carrier group for mil-spec AR-15 / M4 upper receivers. It is not a firearm.
  • Where SOT fits this group to a build, headspace is gauged against that barrel rather than assumed.
  • The bolt supplied in this group is the standard Microbest C158 bolt. For the cam pin socket geometry, that is the HMB™ bolt, sold separately.

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Warranty. The group is supplied unmodified and carries its manufacturer’s warranty in full. The SOT Enhanced marks are applied to the cam pin head and the gas key surface and do not alter any load-bearing dimension or the staking itself. Second of Ten will act as the owner’s agent in any claim against that coverage where it runs broader than ours. See warranty information.
