Bolt Carrier Groups

Eight complete groups, from $109 to $300. Grouped by bolt geometry: four with the HMB™ cam pin socket, and four with the standard pass-through hole.

// How to choose

Every one of these carries the bolt, holds the gas key tight, and does not break. After that, three things actually vary.

Finish decides how easily carbon comes off and how long the surface lasts. Bolt geometry decides whether the cam pin sits in a bored hole or a socket. And the gas key — how it is secured, and whether you can tell at a glance that it has not moved — is where these eight groups genuinely disagree with each other.

Most of ours are SOT Enhanced: an arrow-index marked cam pin whose point faces toward the bolt face, and an index-marked gas key carrying a single fine line across the key and both screw heads. Neither changes how a group runs. Both change what you can tell about one without tools.

01 Finish

Phosphate holds oil and shows wear. Chrome is slicker and wipes clean. Nitride is a conversion with nothing to chip. DLC is the hardest and slickest of the four.

02 Bolt geometry

A standard bolt is bored through at the cam pin. The HMB™ replaces that hole with a socket and runs a radiused pin, retaining material where a drill removes it.

03 The gas key

Hand staked, machine staked, or deliberately not staked at all and torqued with sealant instead. Three defensible answers, and all three are on this page.

// Why we index-mark

Two marks. Two seconds at every cleaning.

Every SOT Enhanced bolt carrier group carries two laser-engraved index marks. Neither changes how the group runs. Both let you check it without tools.

The gas key line

A single line across the gas key and both screw heads, engraved after the key is torqued and staked. While the line is continuous, nothing has turned. If it ever steps out of line, a screw is backing out: stop using the bolt carrier group.

The cam pin arrow

The arrow point faces toward the bolt face, so the cam pin goes back in the same direction each and every time. One settled wear pattern instead of several, and a rule you can check with the bolt out of the rifle.

// HMB™ groups — cam pin socket

Four groups · cheapest first

These four carry the HMB™ bolt, licensed from HM Defense. The pass-through cam pin hole becomes a socket, run with a radiused cam pin, so material is retained at the point the bolt is most likely to break rather than drilled away. Nothing is bulked up and nothing is oversized — they run in any mil-spec carrier and change no external dimension. The three Young Manufacturing groups are sold exactly as Young build them, without our marks; the SOT Enhanced HMB™ carries both.

// Standard geometry — finish and staking

Four groups · cheapest first

These four use the standard bolt geometry the platform has carried since the 1950s — the cam pin passes through a bored hole. What separates them is finish and how the gas key is secured, and all four are SOT Enhanced: arrow-index marked cam pin, index-marked gas key.

Compare within a family first — the two families answer different questions. Then read the gas key column, which is the only one where the makers on this page hold genuinely opposing views, and the difference that will still matter long after the finish has stopped being interesting.

// Before you order

Bolt face. The 6mm ARC groups use a 6.5 Grendel-derived case head and are not interchangeable with the mil-spec .378 face used by 5.56, 6mm MAX, .300 BLK and .350 Legend. Fitting the wrong bolt is a headspace and safety problem, not an inconvenience.

Staking. Young Manufacturing will not warranty a carrier with a staked gas key, no matter who staked it. Their reasoning is set out in full on their product pages and it is worth reading. If you want a staked key, choose one of the groups built that way.

Safety — if a gas key index line is ever out of alignment. Stop using the bolt carrier group. A stepped index line means the screw is backing out of the carrier, which indicates an imminent failure. Once the gas key screws loosen, high-pressure gas leaks out instead of driving the carrier rearward, and that leads to immediate cycling failures — short-stroking, failure to extract, or a complete stoppage.

Have the group inspected by a knowledgeable gunsmith, or contact support@secondoften.com for a replacement if it was purchased from us.

Fitment. All eight are complete groups for mil-spec AR-15 / M4 upper receivers. Where we fit one to a build, headspace is gauged against that barrel rather than assumed.

Cam pin orientation. On SOT Enhanced groups, install the cam pin with the arrow point facing toward the bolt face. The reference holds with the bolt out of the rifle and out of the carrier.

Before installation. Degrease and lubricate. Groups ship with manufacturing residues on them. A bolt carrier group is a component, not a firearm.
