// The operator’s case

Every standard AR bolt is drilled straight through at the point it is most likely to break.

The cam pin hole passes clean through the bolt body, and it does so exactly where the bolt carries its highest load. The platform has lived with that since the 1950s because it is simply how the rifle was drawn. The HMB™ answers it with geometry rather than material science: the pass-through hole becomes a socket, and the cam pin that sits in it is radiused rather than square-shouldered.

Material is therefore retained at the cam pin location where a through-hole removes it. Note the wording — nothing is bulked up and nothing is oversized. The design is HM Defense’s, built under licence, and it is the actual part rather than a workshop copy of a patented geometry.

The SOT Enhanced version adds the two marks we put on our own builds: an arrow-index-marked radiused cam pin and an index-marked gas key. Neither changes how anything runs. Both change what you can tell at a glance — which way the cam pin went in, and whether a gas key screw has moved since it left us.

What the Enhanced version actually changes

Nothing mechanical. The HMB™ is HM Defense’s engineering, unmodified, carrying its manufacturer’s warranty in full. What changes is that two things which were previously invisible become visible: which way the cam pin went in, and whether a gas key screw has moved since it left us.

The bolt is HM Defense’s engineering. What happens to it before it ships is ours.

// Why it

The hole was always the weak point.

01 A socket, not a hole

This is the entire product in one sentence. Where a mil-spec bolt is bored through, the HMB™ carries a blind socket, so the steel a drill would have taken out stays in the bolt at precisely the location that sees the most stress. Note the wording carefully: the design retains material rather than adding it. Nothing is bulked up, nothing is oversized, and it is compatible with any mil-spec bolt carrier.

02 A radiused cam pin

The socket runs with a radiused cam pin rather than a square-shouldered one. A radius spreads load into the surrounding steel instead of concentrating it at a corner, which is where cracks prefer to start. The two parts are designed together; neither is a drop-in improvement on its own.

03 Less cam pin to firing pin contact

The geometry reduces contact between the cam pin and the firing pin. Two hardened parts rubbing against each other under cycling loads is wear you get nothing for — removing it costs nothing and returns service life.

04 The socket holds lubricant

A through-hole lets oil pass straight out the other side. A socket keeps it where it was put. That is a small thing on a clean range day and a real one several hundred rounds into a dusty one.

05 Licensed, not imitated

The HMB™ is HM Defense’s design, built under license. This is not a workshop copy of a patented geometry — it is the actual part, and the licence is why we can name it.

06 Gauged on the rifle it goes in

Where we fit this to a build, headspace is gauged and checked against that barrel — not assumed from supplier paperwork. A bolt and a barrel are a pair, and they are only right together.

07 SOT Enhanced — the arrow-index-marked radiused cam pin

A cam pin can be reinstalled the wrong way round, and a rifle will run for a while before it tells you. Our radiused cam pin carries the SOT arrowhead with SOT inside it, and the arrow point faces toward the bolt face. That reference holds with the bolt out of the rifle and out of the carrier, which is exactly when the mistake gets made. The case for indexing a cam pin is Chad Albrecht’s, taught at the School of the American Rifle armourer’s course; what we added is the arrowhead, so the mark carries a direction rather than only a memory.

08 SOT Enhanced — the index-marked gas key

A single fine engraved line runs across the gas key and both screw heads. While the line is continuous, nothing has turned. If it ever steps out of line, a screw is backing out — visible during a normal cleaning, with no tools and no torque wrench, long before it becomes a stoppage. It costs nothing to look at, which is the entire argument for it.

// Before you order

Safety — if the gas key index line is out of alignment. Stop using the bolt carrier group. A stepped index line means the screw has become loose and is backing out of the bolt carrier, which indicates an imminent failure of the bolt carrier. Once the gas key screws loosen, high-pressure propellant gas leaks out instead of efficiently pushing the carrier rearward, and that loss of pressure leads to immediate cycling failures — short-stroking, failure to extract, or a complete stoppage.

Have the bolt carrier group inspected by a knowledgeable gunsmith. If it was purchased from Second of Ten, contact our Support team at support@secondoften.com for a replacement.

This is the complete group. This is the HMB™ supplied as a complete 5.56 bolt carrier group, which is why it carries both SOT Enhanced marks — the index-marked gas key belongs to a bolt carrier and cannot appear on a bare bolt. The HMB™ sold as a standalone bolt is covered by its own sheets, in four versions across two chamberings and two finishes, and those carry the arrow-indexed cam pin only.

Bolt face compatibility. This is a mil-spec .378 bolt face. It is not interchangeable with 6mm ARC or 6.5 Grendel, whose case heads are larger. Fitting the wrong bolt is a headspace and safety problem, not an inconvenience. If there is any doubt about what your barrel is chambered for, tell us the barrel and we will tell you the bolt.

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Warranty. Supplied unmodified and carrying its manufacturer’s warranty in full. The SOT Enhanced marks are applied to the cam pin head and the gas key surface and do not alter any load-bearing dimension or the staking itself. Second of Ten will act as the owner’s agent in any claim against that coverage where it runs broader than ours, and warrants its own fitting and gauging work. See warranty information.
