// The operator’s case

Ask a serious builder what they look at first on a bolt carrier group and most of them will say the gas key.

Not the finish, not the logo — the staking. Two screws hold the gas key to the carrier, and those two screws sit directly in the path of the highest-pressure gas in the rifle. If they back out, gas escapes instead of driving the carrier rearward, and the rifle short-strokes, fails to extract or stops altogether. Everything else on a BCG is a preference. The stake is a failure point.

Microbest builds bolt carrier groups for the military and for other small arms manufacturers, and their standard staking is entirely serviceable. The Super-Stake is what happens when that step is taken off the production line and done by hand: each gas key staked individually by Phillip Kimm of Bexar Arms, with OCKS premium carrier key screws, then checked one at a time for mil-spec opening and optimum alignment.

Second of Ten sells it Enhanced, with the two marks we put on our own builds — an arrow-indexed cam pin and an index-marked gas key. Neither changes how the group runs. Both change what you can tell about it at a glance.

What the Enhanced version actually changes

Nothing mechanical. The group is the same Microbest Super-Stake, unmodified, with the same warranty. What changes is that two things which were previously invisible become visible: which way the cam pin went in, and whether a gas key screw has moved since it left us.

We did not make the group better. We made it easier to tell when something has gone wrong.

// Why it

The stake is the whole point.

01 Hand staked, then checked

This is the reason the group exists. Instead of the factory staking most carrier groups receive, each gas key is staked by hand with OCKS optimized carrier key screws by Michiguns, and every one is individually inspected for mil-spec opening and optimum alignment. Hand work is only better than machine work when somebody checks it afterwards — here somebody does.

02 C158 bolt, tested not assumed

C158 steel, shot peened, then High Pressure Tested and Magnetic Particle Inspected individually. HPT proves the part survived an overpressure round; MPI looks for the crack that proof round might have started. One without the other tells you less than people think.

03 Full-auto profile carrier

8620 tool steel, M16 full-auto cut. The extra mass at the rear is not about rate of fire — it carries more of the bolt through the cycle and makes the timing less sensitive to a gas system that is running slightly hot or slightly cold.

04 Chrome where it wears

All chrome except the gas key and extractor, which are phosphate. Chrome is slick and gives carbon very little to hold onto; phosphate holds oil where the extractor needs it. The mix is deliberate rather than a compromise.

05 Sprinco springs, both ends

Chrome silicon 5-coil extractor spring and chrome silicon ejector spring, both by Sprinco. Springs are the cheapest part of a BCG and the one most likely to be the reason it stops working several thousand rounds in.

06 4140 extractor, black insert

Mil-spec 4140 phosphate extractor with a black insert behind the spring. Standard practice, correctly executed — which is what you want on the part that has to hold a case rim under load.

07 SOT Enhanced — the arrow-indexed cam pin

A cam pin can be reinstalled the wrong way round, and the rifle will run for a while before it tells you. The Enhanced version ships with our arrow-index-marked cam pin, its head carrying the SOT arrowhead with SOT inside it. The arrow point faces toward the bolt face. That reference holds with the bolt out of the rifle and out of the carrier, which is exactly when the mistake gets made.

08 SOT Enhanced — the index-marked gas key

The Enhanced version also carries a single fine engraved line running across the gas key and both screw heads. While the line is continuous, nothing has turned. If it ever steps out of line, a screw is backing out — and you can see that during a normal cleaning, with no tools and no torque wrench, long before it becomes a stoppage. It costs nothing to look at, which is the entire argument for it.

// Before you order

Safety — if the gas key index line is out of alignment. Stop using the bolt carrier group. A stepped index line means the screw has become loose and is backing out of the bolt carrier, which indicates an imminent failure of the bolt carrier. Once the gas key screws loosen, high-pressure propellant gas leaks out instead of efficiently pushing the carrier rearward, and that loss of pressure leads to immediate cycling failures — short-stroking, failure to extract, or a complete stoppage.

Have the bolt carrier group inspected by a knowledgeable gunsmith. If it was purchased from Second of Ten, contact our Support team at support@secondoften.com for a replacement.

Fitment and inspection.

  • Degrease and lubricate before installation. The group ships with manufacturing residues on it.
  • This is a complete bolt carrier group for mil-spec AR-15 / M4 upper receivers. It is not a firearm.
  • Where SOT fits this group to a build, headspace is gauged against that barrel rather than assumed.
  • The bolt supplied in this group is the standard Microbest C158 bolt. If you want the cam pin socket geometry, that is the HMB™ bolt, sold separately.

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

Warranty. The group is supplied unmodified and carries its manufacturer’s warranty in full. The SOT Enhanced marks are applied to the cam pin head and the gas key surface and do not alter any load-bearing dimension or the staking itself. Second of Ten will act as the owner’s agent in any claim against that coverage where it runs broader than ours. See warranty information.
